Winterizing CBD – What Is It?

Winterizing CBD - What is it?

If you are a grizzled veteran of the health-industry when it comes to cannabidiol (CBD), you have probably heard of the term “winterizing.” As cannabis research continues, the term itself is becoming very important to the current state of the scientific community.

Winterization is an optional step in the process of extracting CBD. Before we dive into the ins and outs of it, we must first discuss the process of extracting the CBD from the hemp plant.

What is Winterization?

Winterizing is an extraction process which further purifies a hemp extract. When this method is being employed, the hemp oil is soaked in alcohol and then frozen to separate out the waxes. The final product has a maple-syrup like consistency and is dark in color.

After winterization, our hemp oil is processed into a CBD isolate. As we discussed in a previous blog, CBD isolate is a pure form of CBD. CBD isolate contains no other phytonutrients and is THC-free. With THC being the compound which gives the “high” other cannabis byproducts are known for, like Marijuana, being THC-free allows for more flexibility in how you can enjoy cannabis.

Extracting CBD from Hemp

hemp field

CBD, or cannabidiol, is an active compound found in the hemp plant. By extracting it, cannabinoids such as CBD are separated from the plant matter in the form of an oil.

Our hemp oil is extracted using the CO2 method. During CO2 extraction, hemp is put under high pressure and low temperatures, which eliminates the need for harsh chemical use. While this is a complex and time intensive method, it is the cleanest and safest method of extraction and ensures a pure CBD product.

After CO2 extraction, we are left with a hemp oil concentrate. Raw concentrates have a thick, paste-like consistency and contain all the available phytonutrients from the hemp plant.

In this form, we have what is known as full-spectrum hemp oil. From here, the hemp oil can be used in a variety of products or consumed as is. However, CBD can be refined further in a process known as winterization.

Why is Winterization Important?

A primary reason why winterizing is the resulting THC-free CBD products. Using a product that contains THC can limit consumers, especially ones who are asked to pass drug tests. Being able to enjoy the many benefits of CBD should be as stress-free as possible.

While we do not utilize winterizing (Tasty doesn’t offer vape products), our sister company Alternate Vape does, which makes their vapes 100% THC-free. Alternate Vape has chosen to use this method because winterizing prevents the buildup of cuticle wax in the lungs. Keep in mind, this is only a byproduct of vaping CBD, and there are no studies that have proven this to be true. Smoking other forms of cannabis wouldn’t result in a buildup, as the wax is burned away due to the higher temperature compared to vape pens.

Full-Spectrum CBD and CBD Isolate – How are they Different?

full spectrum cbd and cbd isolate what makes them different

CBD is extracted from cannabis plants, specifically hemp, due to the larger quantities of the compound in it. It can take one of two forms: CBD isolate or full-spectrum hemp oil. Both contain CBD, however, there is a debate over which one is better than the other.

When consumers first find out there are more than one form of CBD, many wonder which will be better for them to take. A variety of different sources provide definitive answers, however, there are pros and cons to each type. Let’s discuss both CBD isolate and full-spectrum hemp oil and find out which one is a better fit for you.

CBD Isolate

CBD isolate is pure, containing no other active compounds. To produce this extract, the compound is isolated and then refined to remove any additional cannabinoids, terpenes, and additional plant components. The final product is a fine white powder and is typically listed at 95-99% CBD. Those who seek the sole benefits of CBD should consider a CBD isolate product.

By going through this process, the remaining CBD has no other cannabinoids. Meaning that CBD Isolate has no THC, which is known for causing the psychoactive effects of Marijuana. For those who are worried about taking a drug test after using CBD, or just not wanting anything to do with THC in general, this is the better choice for them.

Full-Spectrum Hemp Extract

Full-spectrum hemp oil contains all components of the hemp plant. After extraction, cannabinoids, terpenes, vitamins, minerals, fatty acids, phytonutrients, and additional plant materials remain in the oil.

Full-spectrum hemp oil provides the complete benefit of the hemp plant. Not only do each of these components provide their own benefit, but they often work together in what is known as the entourage effect.

Researchers have found the components of the hemp plant work together to create an effect greater than the component alone. This interaction improves the absorption and effect of CBD on the body.

Since all the natural cannabinoids remain intact, full-spectrum hemp oil contains trace levels of THC. However, the amount is negligible (less than 0.3%) and will not get you high.

Choosing CBD Isolate or Full-Spectrum Hemp Oil

CBD isolates are like eating a single Vitamin C tablet with nothing else, while full-spectrum is like eating an orange. While Vitamin C is found in oranges, there are a lot of other ingredients that are beneficial to the body as well.

There is research that has determined certain ailments to benefit from either CBD isolate or full-spectrum hemp oil. Most of the time, it is a matter of trying both and noting which you prefer. Some find success with one while others prefer taking both.

At the end of the day, the answer to this question is based on what you are looking for out of your CBD. Are you looking for a THC-less experience then the isolate is your best shot. On the flip side, if you prefer to gain benefits from the entire hemp plant, then full-spectrum is probably the best option. Both options are still great ways to experience the benefits of CBD, so there is no quote-on-quote “wrong choice”.

At Tasty Hemp Oil, our CBD oil tinctures are all full-spectrum.

Will I Fail A Drug Test If I Take CBD?

will i fail a drug test if i use cbd

Upon learning cannabidiol (CBD) is derived from hemp, many people wonder if using it will result in failed drug tests. This is a completely understandable question, as CBD comes from the same plant as THC, which is found in Marijuana. As great as the benefits of CBD are, it isn’t worth losing a potential job or an athletic career over.

Whether CBD will show up on a drug test or not is based on many different factors, so let’s dive in.

What Is Getting Tested?

drug test doctor patient

There is a huge variety when it comes to what will be tested. At first, calling whoever is administering the test to learn this could be considered. However, calling the testing facility instead is the best option. Specimens for testing can include:

  • Urine
  • Saliva
  • Blood
  • Hair

What is the Test Looking For?

When it comes to drug tests, they are defined by the number of “panels”. Each of these panels represents a separate substance that will trigger a failed test. The most common drug tests are 5-Panel and 10-Panel, and they look for the following substances:

5-Panel

  • Amphetamines
  • Cannabinoids
  • Cocaine
  • Opiates
  • Phencyldine

10-Panel

  • Amphetamines
  • Barbiturates
  • Benzodiazepines
  • Cannabinoids
  • Cocaine
  • Methaqualone
  • Opiate
  • Phencyclidine
  • Methadone
  • Propoxyphene

(Keep in mind, this is not an exhaustive list of the different kinds of drug tests institutions use).

After looking through the previous lists, you can see THC is included in both, meaning it is widely tested for. Fortunately, urine tests for THC are not known to show for other cannabinoids like CBD, CBG, CBN and more. Therefore, a drug test looking for THC should not show a positive result for CBD.

CBD from Hemp VS CBD from Marijuana

Even with that being said, a CBD product can contain THC if it is full spectrum or sourced from Marijuana. If the CBD product is sourced from marijuana, it is likely there is more than .3% THC in it, and should be avoided if looking to pass a drug test.

CBD sourced from Hemp contains less than 0.3% THC content. Even though 0.3% is a small amount (not enough to get you high) it could still show a positive result for THC if you are taking an unusually high amount of a hemp oil.

If you are currently using CBD products, make sure to investigate where they are sourced from. Alternatively, if you are a loyal customer of ours, feel free to breathe a sigh of relief, since all our CBD is sourced from Hemp.

Another thing to keep in mind is the type of sample being taken. The above information is mostly referencing a urine test. A hair, nail or saliva test may increase chances of THC showing up in a drug screen.

If you are subject to any form of drug testing or screening, we recommend that you do not ingest this product. Please consult with your healthcare practitioner and drug screening/testing company or employer before consuming these products.

THC-Free CBD Products

However, if the CBD products you are taking are completely THC free, you will have nothing to worry about. Our partners at Alternate Vape have a 100% THC-free vape kit, which you can enjoy without worrying about the possibility of failing a drug test.

Can CBD Reverse The Side Effects Of THC?

Can CBD Reverse The Effects Of THC

THC’s (Marijuana’s) side-effects are well known. Whether in books, movies, television shows or even hit songs, the public perception of the plant is a sizable part of American culture. However, even with this being the case, THC’s effects can be much more negative than what our culture idolizes them to be. Due to the legality of Marijuana, there is no telling what people could be using. Every strain is different, and you can’t always be sure of the results of THC if you smoke it, whether you purchase legally or illegally.

Multiple cases have been reported where individuals have felt extremely anxious after using THC. Whether it was the strain, or how much was used, the result is still the same.

The Difference Between CBD and THC

Cannabidiol (CBD) and tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) are two of the most common cannabinoids naturally occurring in cannabis. While they come from the same plant, they both contain a very different genetic makeup. Both compounds also interact with our endocannabinoid system, which is a series of receptors located throughout the body. THC interacts directly with these receptors to create a high. CBD inhibits other enzymes from interacting with cannabinoid receptors. Therefore, CBD not only does not cause a “high” it decreases the high effects from THC.

What This Means

Now with that information, we can conclude CBD can indeed reverse the negative side effects of THC. This is, however, is not a straightforward situation as everybody has different experiences with CBD as well. The experiences are based on the person, not the product itself, as everyone needs to find the right amount of CBD to feel the desired result

The Future

With the recent legalization of CBD under the 2018 Farm Bill, and THC-based substances such as marijuana becoming legal in more states, hopefully, there will soon be FDA-approved studies that will give us more insight in all of the amazing things that hemp can do.

What Does CBD Stand For?

cbd stand for

With the recent explosion in popularity, CBD products are looking to revolutionize the medical industry. Even with this rise in the public spotlight, what does CBD itself stand for, and what even is it? Well, CBD stands for cannabidiol, which is a compound found in hemp plants. This might surprise some people, as both hemp and marijuana are found in the cannabis family. Let’s dig in.

CBD Derived From Hemp VS Marijuana

To know what CBD is, we must first find out where it comes from. Our cannabidiol is sourced from hemp, not marijuana.

difference hemp marijuana

When sourced from hemp, CBD contains little to no THC, which means it will not result in a “high”. While CBD can be derived from Marijuana, the resulting product would be illegal in the vast majority of the United States. The passing of the 2018 Farm Bill made all hemp products legal late, removing the beneficial plant from the Controlled Substances List.

CBD Benefits

While no claims can be made yet, researchers are making progress in proving the benefits of CBD oil and the certain effects it might have on the body. So far, no negative effects of CBD oil have been reported; however, positive reports continue to be discovered.

CBD oil effects have been studied for many potential benefits. We are not doctors and cannot diagnose or guarantee any treatment, but we encourage you to research the effects of CBD oil to find out if you could benefit from it.

With that being said, we can tell you why people use it. Being in the industry for years, we have heard a variety of things from our customers. Including pain relief, being able to relax, and even the reversal of inflammation. CBD works differently for everyone, so keep that in mind if you are new to these kinds of products.

A Variety of CBD Products

One of the many great aspects of CBD is the versatility of the oil. It can be used in a great variety of products, including chocolates, tinctures, softgels, and even pet products! That’s right, the benefits of CBD aren’t only limited to humans. Dogs, cats, and even horses can use cannabidiol!

4 Things To Know Before Buying CBD

4 things to know

When first looking at CBD products, the amount of information to take in can be very intimidating. To help clear the air, here are 4 things you need to know before buying CBD.

1. CBD Does Come From Cannabis

This should only be surprising to people completely new to CBD, but yes, it is derived from cannabis.

A common misconception is hemp and marijuana are one and the same. In fact, they are not. We will get into this more in the next point, so read on to find out more!

2. . . It Won’t Get You High

tasty drops cbd tincture

The short explanation of this point is cannabis has two separate varieties: Hemp and Marijuana. They differ because hemp contains large quantities of CBD and marijuana contains large quantities of THC. CBD does not give you a high, instead resulting in a feeling of relaxation. THC, on the other hand, is a primary component in weed, notorious for the high it gives.

3. CBD Is Legal

The 2018 Farm Bill officially made CBD legal in all 50 states. This was done by removing hemp from the list of Controlled Substances, which included intoxicating items such as Adderall. Now with hemp being placed under the supervision of the Division of Agriculture, farmers will now have a clear set of guidelines to follow in both the growth of industrial hemp.

4. CBD Comes In Different Shapes And Sizes

Searching for CBD will primarily give you results for just oil. However, it has many other forms, including products such as edibles and lip balm. It can also be vaped or used in beauty products. Completely understanding the many forms of CBD is important in deciding which product is for you.

cbd edibles picture

Whether you are looking to casually try CBD or have serious health goals, edibles such as the chocolates and gummies are perfect for you to look into as you think about buying CBD. These are fun to try and cover up most of the “hempy” taste while still giving you all of the benefits of CBD. Individuals who are a little more experienced with CBD supplements usually prefer the tinctures as they taste good and are quickly absorbed under the tongue. Figuring out which product is right for you is all about experimentation through trial and error at this time.

If you know someone who is currently debating which CBD products they should try, this blog would be a perfect one to send their way!
